This translation practice report is based on Fighting Words,a 2020 silver prize winner of Newbery Award, the highest award for American Children’s literature. The translation material is excerpted from Chapter 37 to Chapter 47,with more than 10500 words. This novel tells of a heartwarming story about two sisters who overcome their fears and finally heal each other after being sexually assaulted by their foster father and schoolmate.Fighting Words shows the social issue of child assault and self-protection and has a high value for translation. In the process of translation, the author finds that there are many conversions in Fighting Words, which reflect the tones and attitudes of the characters. However, reproducing the tone of the original context becomes a difficulty in the translation, which can be divided into two aspects:(1)the difficulty in reproducing the tone of the characters using swearing words;(2)the difficulty in reproducing the tone of the characters in reference to sexual assault behaviors. In order to solve the difficulties, the author chooses the reception aesthetics theory as guidance for this translation practice. The theory puts readers in the center, considers readers’ ability of acceptance, and emphasizes creating works in line with readers’ expectation horizon.Under the guidance of the reception aesthetics theory, the above difficulties in reproducing tones can be solved by the following translation methods:(1)explicating tones in swearing words used as interjections and converting the part of speech of the swearing words used as nouns;(2)amplifying the arrogant tone of the perpetrator and mitigating the tone of the victims in reference to sexual assault behaviors. The practice shows that the above strategies and methods can basically solve the difficulty of reproducing tones and provide some reference for children’s literary translation. In the process of translation practice and writing the reports, the author seriously considers the particularity of children readers, always puts child readers in the first place, and has a profound understanding of reproducing the tone in children’s literary works.
