Based on contradictions between the history and reality of racism, this practice translation report takes the seventh chapter We were the Good Guys,Right? New York City from How the Word is Passed—A Reckoning with the History of Slavery across America written by Clint Smith as the English-Chinese translation material. In view of the fact that the original text is a compound text, featuring the characteristics of aesthetics, history and tourism text, the translator adopts semantic translation and communicative translation theory proposed by Peter Newmark.During the translation process, several translation strategies are employed to address lexical problems and long and complex sentences, such as conversion of part of speech, splitting and regrouping, adding and omitting and reordering.Besides, this report emphasizes how to use language databases to filter improper online translation versions of people and place names, and verifies proper noun translation versions through historical data research,so as to achieve coherent, accurate, readable and communicative translation in tandem with its original language styles and stylistic features. This report includes the whole translation process, like task introduction and description, preparations in pre-translation and corrections in post-translation,methods for key and difficult problems, experience gained in this process and deficiency left to be tackled. The translator hopes that this report could remove language barriers to some extent to promote cultural exchange between China and America.
