The text for this translation practice report is from Research on the Farming Culture of Ethnic Minorities in Southern Yunnan,with a total of 129400 words.This book is a theoretical monograph on the study of ethnic minority culture,mainly expounding the diversity and change of the farming culture of ethnic minorities in southern Yunnan from the founding of People’s Republic of China.The translator chose the sixth chapter as the content of translating task,with 12754 words,which mainly includes a brief description of the origin of farm tools in southern Yunnan,the basic types and the cultural interpretation of farm tools.This translation material mainly expresses the development and changes of farming culture,and conveys relevant information.The language is simple and clear,and the layers are clear,so it is an informative text.The textual characteristics of the material is a large number of introductions to the farm tools,so the background information needs to be inquired during translation.Therefore,appropriate translation strategies should be selected.The theory used in this report is the thick translation theory,first proposed by Kwame Anthony Appiah.The theory is based on the use of annotations,which help place the readers in a rich cultural and contextual context.This report aims to explore the difficulties encountered and the translation strategies,methods and techniques used in translation.Through footnotes,endnotes,appendices,explanations and other methods,the translator exposes the implicit cultural information of the source text to increase the readability of the target text.This translation report is divided into four parts.The first part is an introduction,including the background,purpose and significance;the second part is a description of the translation process,including pre-translating,theoretical introduction,translating process and post-translating;the third part is a case study,which aims to analyze the difficulties,key points and application of translation strategies in the translation text under the guidance of thick translation theory;the fourth part is the summary,which discusses the translator’s gains and limitations in this translation practice.
