| This translation practice is derived from the Canada Health Act Annual Report2019-2020 published by Health Canada. The text mainly introduces the medical insurance plans of 13 provinces in Canada from five aspects: public administration, comprehensiveness, universality, portability and accessibility. The translator selected two parts of Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba for translation practice. The source text is an informative text and the translator mainly encountered two kinds of difficulties during translation. The first is at lexical level. There are many medical, legal, and insurance-related technical terms and nominalization is frequently used in the text. The second is at syntactic level. There are many passive voice sentences and long and complicated sentences in the text.It is necessary to consider the differences between English and Chinese languages,Chinese and western expressions and their thinking logic,in order to make the translation more accurate and idiomatic. The translator conducted the translation practice under the guidance of Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation. When translating terms, for terms whose literal meanings conform to the context, literal translation was adopted under the guidance of the semantic translation. And in order to make readers better understand the original text, footnotes were added to explain their definition. For abstract terms whose literal meanings do not fit the context, semantic extension was used following the guidance of communicative translation so as to make it easier for readers to understand. When translating the nominalization, the translator adopted the method of part-of-speech conversion to convert the nouns in English into verbs and adverbs in Chinese. And proper verbs were added to make the translation more fluent and idiomatic. In terms of sentence translation, the translator followed the guidance of both semantic translation and communicative translation. The passive voice sentences in English were converted into the passive or active voice sentences in Chinese. And linear translation, embedding and recasting were adopted in the process of translating long sentences. On the one hand,Canada has a universal healthcare system which is different from China’s health insurance system that combines basic medical insurance, supplementary medical insurance and catastrophic supplementary medical insurance.By consulting CNKI,the author found that in China, there are very few scholars who study the translation of Canadian official medical insurance reports. The translation will provide more information about Canada’s health insurance system and help the two medical insurance systems learn from each other and improve accordingly. On the other hand, the material is characterized by formal and professional terminology as well as many passive voice sentences and long sentences, which may help improve translation competence. |
