In this translation practice report,Professor Zhihui Fang’s academic work Using Functional Grammar in English Literacy Teaching and Learning serves as the translation source.The first chapter is selected for its translation,whose purpose is to illustrate how grammar plays a significant role in the English education at colleges and universities.In view of the fact that the original text is an academic text,with formal language,lexical density as well as the common grammatical phenomena such as passive structures and complex sentences,it is imperative that attention should be paid to the accuracy of information transmission,that is,equivalent translation of the text content.In this regard,the author believes that Catford’s translation shifts theory can be of effective guidance to academic translation.Guided by Catford’s translation shifts theory,this report mainly discusses how to eliminate the limitations of the original language form and re-express the original content through shift techniques.As part of this study,the author will analyze various shift techniques at the levels of vocabulary,grammar,and sentence structure with examples of specific cases from the perspectives of shifts within levels and shifts across levels,encompassing shifts from the former to the latter,shifts from static state to dynamic state and so on.In addition,due to the unique linguistic characteristics of the original text and the bilingual background of the original author,some discourse shift techniques are used to enhance the logic and readability of the text.In conclusion,the author believes that Catford’s translation shift theory studies textual content equivalence at a micro level,which is in line with the principles of academic translation.This report is intended to provide insight and inspiration for academic translation research in theory and ideas for front-line English/foreign language teachers’ classroom teaching in practice.
