| The Shanghai theme TV documentary, which emerged from the Chinese TV documentary movement and is based in the city,is a documentary video text that is historical, spatial and social. This paper takes Lefebvre’s "Space ternary dialectics" and Edward W.Soja’s "The third space" as theoretical perspectives, and selects Shanghai theme TV documentary as the research object. This paper explores the logic and mechanism of space construction of TV documentary in the Chinese context, and summarizes the unique features of Shanghai theme TV documentary on the space construction of the mega-city of Shanghai. This paper takes the lead in introducing the Shanghai theme TV documentary as the research object, and discusses the historical starting point and paradigm shift of the connection between the documentary and the urban space of Shanghai through its historical origins and development.By dividing the development of the link between the two into three stages, the paper illustrates the logic of the construction of urban space that has been inherited by Shanghai theme TV documentary, discusses the logic of the construction of urban space and the innovative ideas developed at different stages, and the synchronicity between these changes and the modernization process of the city of Shanghai. On this basis, through the analysis of the documentaries texts,we explore how the Shanghai theme TV documentary place urban space in the "history-space-society" field and progressively build up the image space, the symbol space and the heterogeneous space as a whole.Firstly,by taking Kevin Lynch’s theory of urban imagery as the research path,we analyze the logic of constructing figurative elements in TV documentary and discuss the paradigm of constructing urban imaginary space in TV documentary. It is pointed out that the Shanghai theme TV documentary presents the physical space and endows the cultural significance in the image by constantly emphasizing the typical city image with fixed meaning, thus forming a readable urban imagery space,i.e."spatial practice".Then, the textual framework theory proposed by Gamson et al.is introduced in conjunction with content analysis to analyse,on the one hand, the textual framework theory proposed by Gamson et al.is combined with the content analysis method to analyse,on the one hand, the choice of subject matter, the object of attention and the audiovisual language of the documentary text, and to explore the specific ways of constructing the symbolic space of the city.On the other hand,it analyses the multiple constructions of urban symbolic space in Shanghai theme TV documentary, summarizes the framework and issues of the constructed urban symbolic space, and summarizes the complex meanings it gives to Shanghai’s urban space,i.e.the "representation of space".In addition, the documentary explores the heterogeneous spaces in the social sphere, looking at the marginal spaces under the urban-rural structure and the new consumer spaces under the expansion of desire, reflecting the power games and contradictory zones in the urban space,i.e.the "Space of representation".Finally, from the dimensions of history, spatiality and sociality, the construction of Shanghai’s urban space and the TV documentary are reflected in each other, summarizing the invisible obscuration of urban space by the construction of Shanghai-based television documentary, exploring the shortcomings and dissonance of Shanghai-based television documentary in reflecting urban space, and then proposing suggestions for optimizing the spatial turn of television documentary. |
