A Report On E-C Translation Of The Current News In The Washington Post

With the enhancing international status of China after the reform and opening up and the deepening of the globalization process,China has increasingly frequent contacts and closer relations with other countries in the world.At the same time,Chinese people concern more about the political,economic and cultural conditions of other countries in the world,and their curiosity and desire to explore international current events are constantly strengthened.As one of the major countries in the world,China is willing to keep abreast of foreign developments and international events,paying special attention to current news,hoping to know ourselves and our enemies and grasp the international situation.In 2022,the “Russia-Ukraine conflict”became the focus of the world,which brought a series of economic,political,military and other impacts to the world,involving changes in the global situation,so the situation and progress of the conflict attracted people’s attention.This translation practice report selected eight pieces of news in The Washington Post about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as the translation material.Using Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the main guide,meanwhile,employing semantic translation theory in proper situation,this thesis summed up translation strategies and methods of current news according to the concrete translation problems and translation of difficult points in translation practice based on the characteristics of the selected news text.The translation practice concludes that Newmark’s communicative and semantic translation theory guides the translation of current news.To correctly convey the content of original text and let target readers have a better comprehension of the source text and achieve the same effect as original language readers,when analyzing specific cases,the translator proposes some appropriate translation methods and techniques based on the characteristics of the selected text at the level of title,vocabulary,sentence pattern and discourse.This translation practice report is of reference significance to improve the quality of Chinese translation of current news.
