A Study Of The Selection Of Ancient Novels In The History Of Chinese Literature In Englis

Overseas research on ancient Chinese novels has achieved continuous development and breakthroughs along with the transfer and translation of ancient novels to the west,the compilation of Chinese literature history,and the birth of research works.The different historical,cultural and academic contexts between China and the West lead to great differences in the origin and development of novels.The early westward transmission of ancient Chinese novels includes professional treatises,bibliographies of novels,Chinese literary history written in English,and translations of novels written by early historians.These documents are of great research value.The forms of fiction research based on the history of Chinese literature in English are diverse and complex.This article collects seven documents on the history of Chinese literature written in English over a period of one hundred years,which are compiled by individual writers or grouped by chapters.The historians include both overseas sinologists and writers of Chinese descent.The anthology of literary history spans a century in time and longitude,and covers a relatively comprehensive range.Therefore,taking literary history as the starting point for the study of overseas ancient Chinese novels,and prying into the views of literature and novels in different contexts from the perspective of compilation style,it is a new way and extremely challenging.This thesis is divided into three chapters besides the introduction.In the introduction part,I sorted out seven Chinese literary history documents and the research situation at home and abroad,so as to find the starting point of the study of ancient novels in this paper.Through the comparison between China and the West in space,and the internal comparison of the West in time,this paper specifically does the following research:The first chapter,this chapter is based on the question of how to choose ancient Chinese novels in literary history,including the selection focus of different literary history novels,what to choose? How to choose? List all the ancient Chinese novels recorded in each literary history and present them in tabular form.Do a comparative study of cross works described in different literary histories.For example,Liu Wuji’s "The History of Chinese Literature" and "The Scholars" in "Cambridge History of Chinese Literature",research on "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" in Galis’ " The History of Chinese Literature" and "Columbia History of Chinese Literature",etc.The second chapter discusses the historical view of novels in the history of Chinese literature in English.Through close reading of the text,it studies the origin and development of Gilles’ novels,Chen Shouyi’s comparison of the origin of Chinese and Western novels,and Liu Wuji’s discussion on the transformation of Chinese novels.The third chapter discusses the arrangement style of ancient novels in the history of Chinese literature in English,"Columbia History of Chinese Literature" arranged by style,"Cambridge History of Chinese Literature" arranged by year,and "Indiana Traditional Literature Guide" arranged by style and table of contents.In-depth study of three Chinese literary histories published in the late 20 th century and the 21 st century:the logic of modular arrangement of novels;the crisis of literary history arrangement like an encyclopedia;wait.The conclusion part combs the development of ancient Chinese novels and Chinese literature history,synthesizes the research status of ancient Chinese novels in English-speaking circles,and looks forward to the future overseas research direction of ancient Chinese novels from two aspects of literature basis and theoretical depth.
