A Report On E-C Translation Of A Concise Survey Of Western Civilization (Chapter Five And Epilogue)

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of the fifth chapter and the epilogue of A Concise Survey of Western Civilization: Supremacies and Diversities throughout History,which respectively introduces ancient Roman history and the reasons and importance of learning western history.The material translated is a historical text,which is mainly used to convey historical knowledge and ideas to readers,and has great significance in enlightening people and promoting cultural communication.This translation task was finished under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory.During the translating process,the features of the historical text are taken into consideration.There are five parts in the report.The first part is task description introducing the background information,language features and translation requirements of the source text.The second part is translation process,which describes preparations,translating and proof-reading.The third part introduces the theoretical framework of Functional Equivalence Theory and its application in translation,which guided the whole translation.In the fourth part,different strategies used in the translation are illuminated.At the lexical level,the translator used the strategies of annotation,conversion of speech,amplification and omission.At the syntactic level,the translator adopted the strategies of conversion of voice,division and combination and inversion.At the textual level,the translator used cohesive devices and added supplementary information to achieve equivalence.The last part is conclusion,in which the translator points out harvest and deficiencies of this translation practice as well as the application value of Functional Equivalence Theory in historical text translation.
