This is an English-Chinese translation report based on A Concise Survey of Western Civilization,a historical book written by Brian A.Pavlac, which has not been translated into Chinese by now.The translator and author of the report is responsible for the fourth chapter,“Trial of Hellenes”,which focuses on the development and achievements of the ancient Greeks, including political systems, religions and cultures. The material is a historical text.Under the guidance of Li Changshuan’s “comprehension, expression, and adaptation(CEA)” framework, the translator applied different theories and adopted corresponding strategies toward specific problems encountered during the translation process, aiming to produce an accurate, natural and coherent Chinese version. The report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is task description, introducing the background, objective and the requirements of this task,as well as the language features of the source text. The second chapter is process description, including preparations, translating, and proofreading. The third chapter is introduction of the CEA framework and its application in translation. The fourth chapter is case analysis, the main part of the report,in which specific cases are analyzed based on CEA framework. It is divided into three sections closely linked and mutually reinforced: first, the contextualization of terminologies and clarification on structural ambiguity during the comprehension stage;second, methods adopted to ensure consistency between the translated version and the source text during the expression stage, such as accuracy and authenticity of words, adjustment for textual coherence, and avoidance of Westernized Chinese expression;third, specific adjustments taken to better convey the source text during the adaptation stage, such as omission, addition, and annotation. The fifth chapter is conclusion, which summarizes insights gained and shortcomings discovered in the translation and in this report, hoping to provide references for historical text translation,or new perspectives for translation report writing.
