| As the irrefutable evidence of Japan’s invasion of China,Mantetsu Newspaper Clippings record and reflect Japan’s invasion and plunder of China in all aspects during its invasion, providing important historical materials for the study of Sino-Japanese relations during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Therefore,it has both unique academic value and realistic significance to translate the English news reports in Mantetsu Newspaper Clippings. The translation materials for this translation task are excerpted from The First Series of the Mantetsu Newspaper Clippings Collected by the Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(hereinafter referred to as Mantetsu Newspaper Clippings),mainly involving the English reports on Sino-Japanese relations during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in the nineteenth, thirtieth and thirty-first volumes,11010 words in total. In terms of text, the translation materials fall into the category of historical news text, with political and ideological nature and distinctive characteristics of the times, which requires the translator to give consideration to China’s mainstream ideology, adhere to the correct political position, and make appropriate manipulation to the original text on the basis of respecting objective facts.Lefevere’s manipulation theory can precisely satisfy the above requirements.Lefevere regards translation as a process of rewriting, manipulated by ideology, poetics and patronage.Based on the three factors of manipulation theory, translation methods are flexibly used in this translation practice at lexical, sentential and textual level. This translation practice has greatly improved the translator’s translation competence and deepened her understanding of the features of news text.It is hoped that it can serve as a reference for the translation of historical news text and provide first-hand historical materials for the study of Sino-Japanese relations during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. |
