| The “going global” of Chinese culture is attracting the world’s attention. The introduction of cultural relics is an important channel for foreign tourists to learn about Chinese culture, but there are still shortcomings in the Chinese translation of the introduction of texts of Chinese cultural relics based on references the author has collected, and the effect of cultural communication needs to be improved. This practice report, guided by Newmark’s text typology, taking “The Qin Dynasty: Birth of a Unified China” as an example, tries to explore the specific translation methods of texts of cultural relics.Newmark divides texts into three types: the expressive, the informative and the evocative. He points out that a text may have three linguistic functions at the same time, with only one function playing the major role.“The Qin Dynasty: Birth of a Unified China” is an informative text, which contains a lot of terms for the introduction of cultural relics;at the syntactic level, long and compound sentences are used, which are strict in expression and objective and accurate in content;at the discourse level, pronouns and conjunctions are used frequently to make the text fluent and complete. At the same time,“The Qin Dynasty: Birth of a Unified China” introduces the history of the Qin dynasty and the function and significance of its cultural relics, the beautiful language features an expressive text.Taking into account the specificity of the text, the author has therefore adopted appropriate translation methods. This report consists of five chapters. In the first chapter, the author briefly introduces the background, importance and the translation process. The second chapter summarizes the studies of translation of Chinese and foreign texts of cultural relics and introduces Newmark’s text typology. In the third chapter, the characteristics of the source text are analysed from lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. The fourth chapter accordingly discusses the translation methods. Finally,in the fifth chapter,in order to provide reference for translation of similar texts, the findings and limitations of this translation practice,as well as possible suggestions for further improvement are summarized. |
