The public welfare documentaries bear a certain social function and public welfare attributes, focusing on the life problems of ordinary people, and presenting real public welfare events that occur in real life based on the people and social life.Public welfare documentaries, the most direct recording method, can be used to maximize the restoration of public welfare reality and reflect the development of public welfare events, thus stirring up emotional resonance among the public and reflecting on the issues in reality. This is due to the growing public involvement in public welfare activities. This article delves into the storytelling of public welfare documentaries, analyzing their narrative traits and techniques, and exploring how they can be improved through storytelling methods and further spread public welfare ideas. The seven chapters of this paper are largely devoted to interpreting the concept, categorization and principles of documentary storytelling, and delineating the growth and development of documentary storytelling both domestically and internationally. The second chapter analyzes the characteristics of public welfare storytelling from the perspective of narrative topics and narrative methods. The narrative topics of the storytelling narrative of public welfare documentary films present dramatic themes, focusing on the civilian life with dramatic value and public welfare hot events with social value. The sad or tender stories often told in public welfare documentaries reflect the emotional nature of the narrative method of storytelling in public welfare documentaries.Explaining the narrative characteristics and limitations of the internal focus, zero focus, and external focus perspectives in the third chapter,it is concluded that multiple narrative perspectives can bolster documentary film storytelling by depicting public welfare reality from multiple angles and displaying drama conflicts at multiple levels. The fourth chapter is about thinking about the narrative structure of public welfare documentaries, exploring the effective ways of storytelling in public welfare documentaries at the narrative structure level from the perspectives of drama conflict, storyline, clue setting, and detail emphasis. The fifth chapter focuses on the story-based characterization of public welfare documentary films, clarifying how to capture the character characteristics and construct the relationship between the main characters in this theme story. The sixth chapter starts from the ontology of documentary films, analyzes the visual and auditory language, and explores how to reasonably use audio-visual elements and language grammar to fit the attributes of public welfare themes and achieve storytelling when public welfare themes are presented in the audio-visual art of documentary films.Chapter 7 explores the benefits that storytelling can bring to the creation and dissemination of public welfare documentary films. The use of storytelling techniques in public welfare documentaries can broaden the communication channels of public welfare concepts, convey real and moving public welfare emotions, and trigger audience attention and reflection on public welfare undertakings.
