Wandering,as a recurring theme in both Eastern and Western literary creations, has long been a subject of extensive attention and writing for literary scholars from China and abroad, including Wang Anyi.As a prolific contemporary writer,Wang Anyi’s literary career has undergone multiple transformations, but her exploration of the theme of wandering has remained constant throughout her creative journey. In the 1980 s and 1990 s,Wang Anyi focused on narrating individual experiences of wandering, reflections on urban and rural civilizations, and the search for a spiritual home.Since the beginning of the new century,a theme exploring the migration and dispersion of people in the era of globalization has consistently run through her works whether in her novels such as Fuping,Growing in the Upper Layer and Lotus at the Bottom in A Pond,Heroes Everywhere,Anonymous,A Knife,A Thousand Words,or in her short stories such as Red Bean Grows in the South,Commotion of Voices, etc, broadening the scope of Wang Anyi’s writing on wandering. From the textual presentation of her wandering writing,Wang Anyi portrays various forms of wandering in her novels of the new century, shaping numerous distinct characters who are wanderers. She highlights the thematic significance of wandering through the sense of homelessness in space, powerlessness in time, and a lack of emotional support. From a narrative perspective, she not only focuses on the movement and migration of people between urban and rural areas but also employs a global perspective to depict the contemporary phenomenon of population wandering and dispersion in the era of globalization. She provides a comprehensive observation of the living conditions, identity dilemmas, and spiritual reflections of the strangers in a foreign land, and alleviates the anxiety of modern wanderers feeling “rootless” by constructing an “emotional community.” From a gender perspective,Wang Anyi not only continuously explores the plight of women in her novels of the new century but also emphasizes the depiction of a group of men who wander on the outskirts of the city and their spiritual journey. Her writing on the experiences of both genders demonstrates an expansion of her gender perspective and a profound contemplation of the meaning of life.Wang Anyi’s attention to wandering and her narrative of it in her numerous works stem,on the one hand, from her own experiences of growing up in an unstable environment, and on the other hand, from the context of the new century. As a writer with a profound humanistic sentiment and empathy for the lower class,Wang Anyi consistently views the wanderers at the bottom of society with a warm and compassionate gaze, employing an egalitarian perspective to write about their survival and lives. Her heartfelt depiction of daily life reveals the beauty of human nature.Through her writing on the phenomenon of wandering,Wang Anyi reflects the social realities and urban development of the new century, embodying her profound contemplation of urbanization and globalization processes,as well as her realistic and humanistic concern for the lower class and marginalized groups in the city.
