| This paper investigates the influence of Han Wo’s " Xianglian Ji" on Song Ci(a form of classical Chinese poetry)in three aspects: female imagery, love writing, and imagery construction. In terms of female image portrayal,"Xianglian Ji" depicts two classic female images: the coquettish and the sorrowful. The former is mainly based on Han Wo’s early lover, portrayed as a shy girl in the typical setting of courtyard with a swing. The latter is often depicted as a lonely woman in the deep boudoir, with flowers used as metaphors by Han Wo.These female images and their portrayal techniques were both borrowed by Song ci poets.Regarding the depiction of love, the tragic scenes of love and direct expression of love pains in "Xianglian Ji" had an impact on the creation of Song ci poetry. The so-called tragic scenes include the interaction behind the window in "Yi Zui" and the separation of swallows in "Chun Zhou".As for the expression of pain in love,it includes "winning only sorrow throughout life" in "Wu Geng" and "the lotus refuses to marry the spring breeze" in "Ji Hen".This section also involves misunderstandings of certain phrases by Song writers due to differences in cultural context and mentality during the Song dynasty. In terms of imagery construction, the two typical imagery constructs in "Xianglian Ji",the empty and lonely atmosphere and the cold and gloomy atmosphere, have had a profound impact on the imagery construction of Song Ci.The empty and lonely atmosphere integrates deep emotions into vast and empty environments, while the cold and gloomy atmosphere triggers emotional loneliness through physical sensations of coldness. Both of these constructs have influenced the imagery construction of Song Ci,with varying degrees of acceptance among Song poets. For example,Ouyang Xiu deeply explored the empty and lonely atmosphere in Han Wo’s poem "Yi Liang" from the literal meaning to the technique, while some poets only stayed at the level of using phrases. |
