This thesis is based on the translation practice of the book Music in Medicine(excerpts)published by Sidney Licht in 1946.It expounds on the feasibility of the strategies and the methods that are employed to make the translation coherent, and the elaboration is made through some typical translation examples.Generally, the strategies and the methods used in this translation try to make the translated text coherent in the manner of the original text, and take into account the function of the target text and the cultural background and the knowledge of the target readers as well. The strategies and the methods used in this translation include: to change the linear structure by changing the word order or sentence order;to add the overt linguistic devices by using lexical repetition and semantic connectors;to keep the linguistic style consistent by making the word choice adapted to the context and adopting the same sentence pattern;to strengthen the text coherence by adding some background information. It proves that these strategies and methods can effectively make the translation coherent, and it is hoped that they can shed light on the similar translation practices in the future.
