The All China Interpreting Contest, organized by the Translators Association of China,is one of the major interpreting contests in the country. The author has participated in the 9th All China Interpreting Contest and has gone through the complete contest process from the preliminary round to the national final, achieving success and gaining experience in the preparation for and participating in interpreting contests.Based on the above practice, this report analyses the merits and weaknesses of the author’s on-stage performance and reflects on the experience, with the goal of serving as a reference for other interpreting students in their preparation and competition. The report begins by recounting the author’s pre-contest preparation procedures,as well as contest-oriented training such as subject knowledge development and manner training. It then adopts the four modules of interpreting competence proposed by Wang Binhua as a framework to conduct qualitative analyses. In bilingual competence, the report highlights the impact of vocabulary on listening comprehension and the problems of grammar and non-nativelikeness in the target language output. In extra-linguistic competence, the importance of encyclopedic knowledge and professional subject knowledge is demonstrated, explaining that when building extra-linguistic knowledge,a combination of breadth and depth should be considered. In the interpreting skills module, the report points out two methods of information processing:segmentation and conversion. In terms of psychological quality, the report examines how nervousness affects one’s performance and recommends time-limited simulation training.Based on the above analysis, the author reflects on the importance and relationship of the four modules of interpreting competence, summarizes gains and losses throughout the practice, and offers suggestions to later contestants. The thesis concludes that interpreting contests facilitate interpreting training and that the two reinforce each other;theory can guide practice from a higher perspective, assisting learners in the identification of difficulties and the development of future training directions.
