Along with the growing global influence of China, many Indonesian students have begun to find out the importance of the Chinese language.Nowadays, there are more and more Indonesian students who start to learn Chinese in Indonesia, and at the same time, many Indonesian students would like to learn the language in China.Spoken Chinese is very important in learning the Chinese language.Considering the differences of learning spoken Chinese in Indonesia and in China, based on Oxford’s theory of language learning strategies, which are divided into memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy and social strategy, the present study conducts investigations with questionnaires and interviews with Indonesian students in both Chinese and non-Chinese language environments to understand better how they apply these strategies in learning spoken Chinese. This study has found that Indonesian students in the Chinese language environment implement learning strategies while studying and practicing spoken Chinese more frequently than the students who are in the non-Chinese language environment. This study further explores Indonesian students’ use of each spoken language learning strategy. This study also discusses the motivation of Indonesian students to learn Chinese, the problems they encounter and the obstacles that students are faced with in improving their spoken Chinese.Based on the results of the survey and analysis, along with the interview with Indonesian students who are relatively good at spoken Chinese, and according to the students’ learning situations and existing problems, the researcher also provides some effective suggestions for Indonesian students to improve their spoken Chinese and for teachers to teach Chinese spoken language more effectively in both Chinese and non-Chinese language environments. It is hoped that this study will help Indonesian students in different environments make flexible use of different learning strategies and achieve better results in their learning of spoken Chinese.
