The Ministry of Education officially issued the English Curriculum Standard for Secondary Vocational Education(hereinafter referred to as the New English Curriculum Standard),which has stated explicitly that the fundamental task of secondary vocational education is to foster virtue through education and enhance students’ key competences in English discipline.With the implementing of this New English Curriculum Standard,more and more English teachers of vocational schools start to focus on whether the design of classroom teaching is in line with New Curriculum Standard,but still think little of homework design.At present,most English teachers of vocational schools are influenced by“ exam-oriented education ” and still adopt the traditional way of designing and assigning homework.English homework as a critical carrier of English teaching activities plays an important role in developing the key competences in English for vocational school students.The development of key competences in English for vocational school students requires that the optimized design and implementation of the assignment tasks should be consistent with the New English Curriculum Standard.The research focuses on the fundamental issue of “ How to design English homework that meets the requirements of the New English Curriculum Standard? ” and conducts the research through questionnaires and interviews.According to the analysis of the results of questionnaires and interviews on the current situation of English homework in vocation schools,it is concluded that the problems existing in the English homework at this stage include single homework function,unsatisfied homework design quality,insufficient homework assessments and homework management failure.It is analyzed that the causes of these four main problems mentioned above are as follows: the vocational schools pay little attention to the management of homework;most English teachers of vocational schools lack comprehensive understanding to the purpose of English homework and the English homework design skills of the English teachers in vocational schools needs to be improved.Based on the existing problems of the current English homework in vocational schools,it is proposed to take the objectives of New Curriculum Standard as the guideline,focusing on teachers’ homework design ability,involving the function,content,type,difficulty and assessment of the homework and other aspects.The founding shows the functional orientation of vocational school English homework is to cultivate students’ self-learning ability and promote students’ all-around development.Therefore,the English homework design for vocational school students should highlight the process of self-learning and educating people in all respects.It is necessary to design English homework close to the situation of real life and workplace to improve students’ language competence and the communication skills in workplace in English.Practical,cooperative and extensible English homework should be provided to enhance students’ comprehensive abilities.The English homework of vocational schools oriented to key competence stated in New English Curriculum Standard requires different levels of difficulty of English homework to be designed to satisfy the development demands of students in different levels.Stratified and personalized English homework should be designed to suit different students’ learning needs.As for the design of English homework assessment in vocational schools,the assessment subjects,assessment forms and comments should be diversified.It is expected that this study can bring some reference and enlightenment for the teachers of vocational schools to think about the English homework reform under the New English Curriculum Standard.
