With the rapid expansion of online Chinese international education and the increasing integration of modern educational technologies into Chinese classes, the application of multimodal teaching mode in online Chinese classes for Chinese children is of great research significance. As a special learning group,Chinese children have advantages of Chinese learning and cultural identity, but lack the internal motivation to learn Chinese in depth. The thesis defines multimodal types and symbols on the basis of previous research, observing and analysing the multimodal types, functions and synergy in ten online Chinese classes based on the author’s teaching practice. The thesis also explores the applicability of multimodal teaching mode through teachers’ questionnaires and students’ interviews, and proposes teaching suggestions in terms of multimodal design principles, multimodal pairing relationships and multimodal using strategies,in order to provide useful references for online Chinese teachers. The main body of the thesis has four parts.Chapter one introduces the multimodal discourse analysis and explores the advantages of its application to Chinese classes for Chinese children.Chapter two selects ten classes to observe and analyse the teachers’ multimodal use and the multimodal synergy in four main teaching steps of online classes.Research results show that the most common modalities used by the practical and experienced teachers are verbal and visual modalities. The practical teachers are found to be flexible in their approach to teaching content, while the experienced teachers are found to be good at using body language and focusing on student-teacher interaction.Chapter three examines teachers’ multimodal use and students’ multimodal preferences through teacher questionnaires and student interviews.Research results show that teachers’ modality use and students’ modality preference in each class step were generally consistent.Teachers have a positive attitude towards multimodal teaching mode and often use different modalities in their online Chinese classes.Students’ feelings about auditory and body language modalities are less pronounced, and the vast majority of students give more positive feedback on visual modalities.Based on the classes observations and findings,Chapter four proposes suggestions for online Chinese teachers to follow the principles of multimodal design, make reasonable use of multimodal pairings, and improve the teacher’s multimodal using strategies.
