Image-Text Mutualism

There is an inseparable relationship between illustrations and Poe’s literature.From his own creative practice,the need for "unified effect" made him actively think about how to highlight the visual in literary creation.From the perspective of the continuous re-creation of his mysterious horror novels by later illustrators,illustrations gradually formed an organic whole with Poe’s story,and became an unavoidable object of Poe’s research.In addition to language narration,illustrations constitute Poe’s image narrative form;In addition to academic research,illustrations constitute Poe’s image criticism model.This paper takes Clark’s illustrations in Allan Poe’s mysterious horror novels as the research object,and further clarifies the literary illustrations from the following aspects.First,the essence of illustration.Through Allan Poe’s narrative and illustration,according to Heidegger’s discussion on the issue of artistic truth,with the help of the specific painting of agricultural shoes,it extends to the illustration works drawn by Clark for Poe,clarifying the essence of illustration.From its essence,illustrations are both covered and open.It is in the revelation of the hidden narrative implication that they are associated that they gain richness.The interpretation process of illustrations is the process that readers reach the uncovered state by questioning and revealing the invisible world associated with the visible world.The analysis of this problem provides evidence for the emergence of illustrations beyond simple decoration,and also clarifies the relationship between illustrations and narrative and the unity between them.Second,the generation of illustrations.There are certain conditions for the generation of Allan Poe’s literary illustrations,including history,reality,language and creation.First of all,there is a consanguineous relationship between the novel and the illustration.The illustration is equivalent to the live performance in the period of oral literature,which reproduces the presence covered by the head-style text and recalls the resonance in the period of collective story,which provides the historical only personally selects the corresponding illustrations of his text,but also pays great attention to the visual transmission of language in the process of creation,which provides the power for the narration,thus creating a horizon of expectation for the audience to read the text,and playing an intermediary role between narration and readers.The third relationship is the complementation of pictures and texts.Narration forms the language supplement and moral interpretation of illustrations,while illustrations realize the reinterpretation and undercurrent presentation of narration.Narration and illustrations thus form an organic Allan Poe text.Allan Poe’s mysterious horror novels provide a carrier for the generation of his illustrations,and the illustrations provide a visual window for his works.Starting from the art of illustration in novels,this paper takes Allan Poe’s illustration book as the concrete support,and Clark’s illustration as the concrete reference to explore the transformation path,multiple relations and the deep internal mechanism between the images and texts,and promotes the illustration into a critical form.It is through the analysis of the conditions,nature and relationship of the generation of Poe’s literary illustrations that the construction of Poe’s illustrated literature is completed.
