Study Of The Inheritance And Protection Of Bajiao Ancient City Cultural Heritage In Xiahe County,Gansu Province

Located in Ganga Town,Xiahe County,Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture,Gansu Province,Bajiao City is on the southern side of the ancient Silk Road,the intersection between the civilization of the central plains and that of the western regions,and the watershed between the nomadic and the cultivated peoples.As a military defensive cultural heritage of the China’s ancient frontier region,its architectural form not only accommodated the needs of military defense but also reflected the cultural connotations of religion.Bajiao City was listed as a major cultural relic protection unit in Gansu Province in 1981,a sixth national key cultural relic protection unit in 2006,and a fifth traditional village in 2018.Over thousands of years of development,it has witnessed military,postal,commercial,and cultural exchanges between the central government of the Central Plains and the ethnic minority regimes of the Northwest Frontier.Therefore,it contains rich historical relics and cultural connotations.Although it was abandoned several times,Bajiao City still exists as an important part of the production and life of the local villagers and belongs to the living heritage still in use.Not only is it a significant part of the cultural heritage of the Silk Road,but it is also an important embodiment of the cultural exchange and integration of China’s multi-ethnic groups,which is of great research value.With the development of modernization,the economic conditions and living standards of the villagers in Bajiao City have enhanced,but inevitably its historical style has been affected to some extent,and it is gradually being assimilated by modern villages and towns.How to preserve historical and cultural relics,maintain the historical style of Bajiao City,highlight cultural characteristics,and safeguard the interests of villagers while developing the economy is an urgent issue to be addressed in the process of cultural heritage protection and development.Based on literature and field investigation,my thesis takes Bajiao City as the research object,the material and intangible cultural heritage of it and its surrounding cultural heritage resources are sorted out,the constituent elements and value analysis of it are carried out,and the obvious or potential relationship between various cultural heritage resources is paid attention to analyze the issues facing the cultural heritage of Bajiao City,and then explore the contents and strategies for its preservation in the context of modernization.My thesis focuses on four aspects: first,it explores the theoretical basis and introduce the natural and human conditions of Bajiao City,the natural conditions including geographical location,geological topography,climate,and hydrology,human conditions including population and ethnic groups,infrastructure,economic development;Second,with the help of relevant literature,map data and field survey results,it has presented the walled sites and cultural relics of Bajiao City and the related cultural heritage around it.The third is to analyze the constituent elements of the cultural heritage of Bajiao City and its surrounding areas and conduct a value analysis to understand the resource properties of Bajiao City;Forth,to explain the current situation of its protection and development,the problems found in the survey,and the advantages of its tourism,and to propose operable protection and development strategies in three aspects: physical environment,cultural environment,and indigenous people,referring to the analysis results and the current situation of preservation and utilization.According to a holistic perspective,my thesis studies the cultural heritage resources of Bajiao City and its surrounding areas,which can not only have a deeper and comprehensive understanding of its cultural connotation and value,realize the protection and sustainable development of the cultural heritage of Bajiao City,but also help integrate Bajiao City into the regional environment and realize the linkage development of the cultural heritage and the people’s livelihood.By proposing a strategy for the protection and development of Bajiao City,the purpose of promoting the protection and inheritance of cultural heritage will be achieved.
