“Absolute music” is an important concept in nineteenth-century music. It is involved in both a debate about musical aesthetics and a complicated issue in music history.Especially,it is associated with the development of the Romantic symphony. This paper take the nineteenth-century pure tone optimism and French symphonic composition as the background, decipher the pure music language in the Symphony in D minor, and dissect the pure music connotations metaphorically implied in the Symphony in D minor. From pure music context to ontology, and from ontology to connotation, the aim is to interpret this pure music symphony work from all angles and perspectives, and thus to understand what pure music is.The first chapter focuses on the concept of pure music and the pure musical symphony of the Romantic period.By narrating the essence and evolution of the concept of pure music and the dilemma of symphonic creation in the post-Beethoven era, taking the problem of symphony as a clue and extending the integration of pure music and symphony,Frank’s "Symphony in D minor" is placed in the historical context of pure music, and the "Symphony in D minor" in the context of pure music is introduced in detail. The second chapter explores the personality characteristics of pure music based on the ontology of the work, and unfolds from three aspects: circular form, tonal design, and "third musical style".Starting from the concept of "organism" in Hanslick’s view of pure music,we analyze the importance of the use of "circular form" in this work to its structure. Then he elaborates on the symmetrical tonal layout in the work, highlighting the logic of Frank’s tonal design.Through the analysis of internal structure,it is highlighted that this work emphasizes music-oriented,and does not need to use external words to make musical works achieve the unity of musical structure and form. The concept of "third musical style" can reflect the realization of both melodic polyphonic thinking and harmonic form thinking in the concept of Beethoven’s sonata in the creation of this work, thus confirming the constitutive category of pure music.Based on the above content, the third chapter further explores the connotation of pure music, argues that pure music also has ideological content through the interpretation of the spiritual meaning of this work, and then sorts out the evaluation of "Symphony in D minor" in the context of pure music and the significance of this work to the revival of French music and the development of pure instrumental music.
