This translation report is based on the book The Science of Animal Welfare:Understanding What Animals Want written by the British biologist Marian Stamp Dawkins, from which twenty thousand words are selected as the translation material. The purpose of the report is to elaborate the problems encountered in the translation process and put forward solutions to them, and analyze the translation strategies and methods. As an academic text with accurate words and distinctive stylistic features, the original text aims to convey new concepts of animal welfare, and its target readers are those who are interested in animals and animal welfare. The translation of this text requires the translator to be loyal to both the original author and the target readers, achieving the purpose of the original author and meeting the expectations of the readers.Based on that,Nord’s function plus loyalty theory is adopted as the theoretical basis for text and function analysis.Throughout the whole process of translation, the translator uses appropriate translation methods to solve language problems, preserve the stylistic features of the original text, and realize the functions of the text under the guidance of this theory, showing its practical guiding role in translation of academic texts. In this report, the present writer starts from two aspects of linguistic problems and stylistic features, analyzing specific examples to clarify the problems and solutions in the translation process.Linguistic problems are common in E-C translation, which are solved in the translation process by specific methods such as translation shifts, amplification, omission and philological translation.Stylistic features are what the translation material is personalized as an academic text.Terms, hedges, slangs, parallelism forms and other expressions that reflect stylistic features are translated by preserving the stylistic features of the source text as much as possible and ensuring the integrity of the information in the original text and the fluency of the translated version,so as to be loyal to the original author and the target readers.
