A Report On E-C Translation Of Encounters With Animals(Excerpts)from The Perspective Of Compensation Theory

Based on an excerpt from Gerald Darrell’s Encounters with Animals,this report analyses and discusses the problems encountered in the translation process under the guidance of translation compensation.As a documentary literary work with both informative text and expressive text characteristics,Encounters with Animals mainly recounts the author’s marvelous experience of finding rare and valuable animals worldwide as well as observing and protecting them.The selected material contains many passive voices,complex sentences,and some technical terms with cultural features.Translation losses at different levels inevitably occurred in the translation process owing to differences between English and Chinese.In order to compensate for the losses as much as possible,this report studies the approaches to solving the problems of the translated text under the guidance of Xia Tingde’s translation compensation theory.Based on Xia Tingde’s six principles and eight categories of compensation,this translation practice compensates for the losses from the semantic,linguistic,aesthetic,and cultural levels by adopting amplification,specification,annotation and other compensation strategies,so as to fully reproduce the intention,cultural information and aesthetic value of the ST and to convey them to the target readers.The translator realizes that compensation is an effective way to make up for translation losses through this translation practice.Meanwhile,the practice has proved that it is the translator’s responsibility to compensate for the translation losses that occur in the translation process to achieve an ideal translation effect.
