| The source text the translator chooses for the translation practice is from one of the latest works of the famous American bestselling author Daniel H.Pink,The Power of Regret, published in February 2022.The author divides regrets into four main categories, including foundation, courage, morality and interpersonal relationship. In doing so,he emphasizes if regrets are handled properly, they can bring many benefits. The selected text uses a large number of parentheses and intersperses them in sentences that should be coherent, resulting in fragmented sentence structure and ambiguous semantics, which causes a lot of trouble to translators and readers. Thus, translating the parentheses reasonably and fluently is a major difficulty in this translation practice. The translator proposes to adopt the Skopos Theory as the theoretical foundation to instruct this practice, following the three principles of the Skopos Theory, namely the principle of purpose, the principle of coherence and the principle of loyalty. The translator explores how to express English insertion components in the source text in Chinese translation fluently and smoothly.Firstly, the translator reads the literature on parentheses in English, including its definition, classification, function and strategy of Chinese translation.Based on the difficulties encountered in the translation practice, the translator applies four common methods for the Chinese translation of parentheses in terms of the semantics and functions in the sentence, combined with the analysis of specific cases, which are sequencing, embedding, recasting, using brackets, and aiming to convey the content and semantics of the source text accurately.Furthermore,by translating this source text, the translator is able to combine theory and practice and apply translation skills to specific translation practices. In the process of writing the report, some problems are solved, and many strategies are put forward, which helps to improve the translator’s translation ability. It also brings some references value for the translation of parentheses. |
