Xu Xu is one of the most enthusiastic writers in the history of modern Chinese literature, with outstanding works in fiction, poetry, drama, and prose.Compared to his highly acclaimed fiction, there has been relatively little research on Xu Xu’s poetry creation in academic circles.Xu Xu’s poetry creation spans his entire creative career, reflecting his emotional tendencies at different times. The 1930s and 1940s were a period of high productivity for Xu Xu’s poetry, which was influenced by multiple factors.Xu Xu’s poetry creation during this period built on the tradition of the May Fourth New Poetry movement while exploring new avenues, showcasing unique artistic and ideological characteristics.Apart from the introduction, this paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter explores the causes of Xu Xu’s poetry creation in the 1930s and 1940s,starting from the turbulent times he lived in,the local cultural elements, and his personal experiences. The reality of China’s internal and external troubles in the 1930s and 1940s were significant factors that led to Xu Xu’s poetic creations. Also, during this period,Xu Xu lived in the Nationalist area, which witnessed a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, and he had firsthand experience of both traditional Eastern and exotic Western cultures. The influence of Chinese and Western cultures inspired Xu Xu’s poetry creation. Moreover,Xu Xu’s life experiences during this period, such as drifting from home, emotional turmoil, and intellectual growth, were also important sources of inspiration for his poetry. The second chapter discusses Xu Xu’s poetic ideological characteristics in the1930s and 1940s,based on his works from this period, which reinterpreted traditional philosophical topics, innovated the concept of love poetry, and presented individual nationalistic and societal views in complex times. This paper will examine the poetic thoughts created by Xu Xu during this period and explore the unique poetic ideological characteristics that emerged on the foundation of inheriting traditional and modern themes. The third chapter discusses, through representative works of Xu Xu’s poetry from the 1930s and 1940s,the artistic characteristics of his poetry, which includes embracing inclusiveness and innovation by balancing ideal and realistic elements, incorporating elements of fiction, drama, and prose into poetry, and shaping ancient traditional imagery, modern urban imagery, and philosophical natural imagery. The fourth chapter analyzes and reassesses the values and limitations of Xu Xu’s poetry in the 1930s and 1940s.As a pivotal component in the history of modern Chinese poetry,Xu Xu’s poetic creations attempted to resist market-oriented literary environments, and explore new paradigms in modern Chinese poetry.Furthermore, his poetic creations in the Shanghai "Island" period of the 1930s and 1940s made a significant contribution to the richness of "Island" literary poetry creation. However,Xu Xu’s poetry during this period also had its limitations. Some of his works were overly personal and lacked emotional impact, while others had rigid forms due to pursuing innovation. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the ideological and artistic values of Xu Xu’s poetry during the 1930s and 1940s.It concludes that Xu Xu’s poetry during this period, driven by an innovation consciousness and building on the foundation of inheriting new poetry, new thoughts, and old literary elements, presented unique poetic ideological and artistic implications. From the perspective of modern Chinese literature history, this paper summarizes and predicts how Xu Xu’s poetry in the 1930s and 1940s expanded and enriched modern poetry content.
