The nonlinear narrative structure differs greatly from the traditional linear narrative structure, primarily in terms of nonlinear narrative time, jumping theatrical space, and multiple writing perspectives.Nonlinear narrative aims to break free from the constraints of traditional linear storytelling, presenting more complex and profound stories. In the field of theater, the application of nonlinear narrative is still in the exploratory stage. In the 20 th century, the rise of postmodernism had a significant impact on the cultural trends in the theater industry, leading to a significant transformation. Some playwrights began to explore new directions in theater development, gradually applying nonlinear narrative to the stage. For example,Arthur Miller’s "Death of a Salesman," Brecht’s "Mother Courage and Her Children," and Chekhov’s "Three Sisters" successfully incorporated nonlinear narrative into theater. In China, experimental theater, which emerged in the 1980 s,also made new explorations in narrative style, such as Gao Xingjian’s "Absolute Signal," Lin Zhaohua’s "Uncle Doggies’ s Nirvana," and Meng Jinghui’s "Si Fan." The nonlinear narrative structure boldly adopts a writing model that subverts traditional linear narrative, bringing more colorful and diverse theatrical works to the stage. This paper takes the original script "Taisheng Lou" as its starting point, discussing the specific application of non-linear narrative structure in modern theater creation from the perspective of scriptwriting. With the theoretical basis of existing nonlinear narrative dramas and practical examples, this article explores the use of nonlinear narrative mode in drama creation from four perspectives: character shaping, plot construction, stage setting, and aesthetic value. It expounds on the nonlinear narrative structure in theater creation, aiming to enrich the theoretical system of nonlinear narrative structure in modern theater theory.Nonlinear narrative is a creative concept and approach that can promote the continuous development of theater theory in modern drama.Over the past century,Chinese modern theater has made significant progress thanks to the efforts of countless theater practitioners.Building on this foundation, the nonlinear narrative structure,as a relatively new narrative theory, still requires further exploration by theater practitioners. As theater practitioners in the new era,we should always adhere to this idea, keep up with the trend, and actively research the nonlinear narrative structure in our future theater creations.
