With the constant development of China’s economy and the increase of per capita disposable income, the demand for green food such as organic milk, organic beef is rising.Accordingly, people are paying more and more attention to how to raise organic cattle properly. The source text Nutrition and Feeding of Organic Cattle,2ndEdition was published in January 2021 by CABI(Centre Agriculture Bioscience International). As a guidebook for organic cattle farmers, this book gives a systematical description of some aspects related to nutrition and feeding of organic cattle, involving the basic principles of organic cattle production, breed selection, feed ingredients, diet preparation and feeding techniques. The translator chooses Chapter Three of the book as the source text of this translation practice. The source text belongs to pastoral science and technology, and the translator uses the theory of functional equivalence proposed by Eugene A.Nida as the theoretical guidance of this translation practice. The translator expounds all the difficulties encountered in the translation process from three levels of lexicon, syntax and discourse, including technical terms, common words, passive voice, long sentences and discourse cohesion.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the translator provides a detailed analysis of how she copes with these difficulties with specific examples.Different translation methods and techniques are adopted, such as literal translation plus annotation, free translation, conversion of part-of-speech,conversion of voice, sequencing, reversing, reiteration and so on,making it possible for the target language readers to feel substantially the same as the source language readers.Through this translation practice, the translator has gained a basic understanding of the digestive process and nutritional needs of cattle, enriched her theoretical knowledge of functional equivalence and improved her translation ability. It is hoped that this practice can provide some reference for Chinese pastoral translation learners.
