The report is based on the E-C translation(Chapter 1,2,9)of the Planter of Modern Life published by Stephen Heyman in April,2020.The book narrates the life experience of Bromfield,a young war driver who gradually became an influential writer, but returned to the farm for his enthusiasm and desire for the land, trying to awaken a strong awareness of the people to protect environment and farmland. As a biographical text, the book not only narrates history objectively, but also artistically facilitates the vividness and literariness of the language in local parts so as to convey the author’s emotional attitude. In the source text, the author achieves such effect through using fuzzy rhetoric. Therefore, this essay, based on Han Qingling’s classification of fuzzy rhetoric, conducts an analysis from stable fuzzy rhetoric and temporary fuzzy rhetoric.Combined with the text, the essay analyzes the translation of stable fuzzy rhetoric from fuzzy nouns, fuzzy verbs, fuzzy quantifiers and fuzzy color words, while the analysis of temporary fuzzy rhetoric is carried out from metonymy, metaphor and personification. In the process of translation, the translator adopts methods like “precise to fuzzy”,“fuzzy to precise” and “fuzzy to fuzzy”,and combines techniques such as literal translation, free translation, amplification and omission to achieve an expressive equivalence as the source text.Through study and analysis of the translation of fuzzy rhetoric in this biographical text, the translator has summarized relevant translation experience, hoping to provide reference for other translator.
