| The Economist is highly relevant to the current international economic events.It provides not only readers at home and abroad with a channel to understand international financial affairs but also authentic foreign periodical materials for non-English learners to improve English.Translating such articles can improve the translator’s translation awareness and skills.The translation report,founded on Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,with the translation of over 10,000 words in 21 articles of the Buttonwood column in The Economist from January to June in 2020,effectively utilizes the following eleven translation methods: extension of word meaning,annotation,repetition,amplification,omission,inversion,division,negation,change of voice,reconstruction and adaptation.By comparing and contrasting the differences between English and Chinese,the translator uses different translation methods to analyze the selected text from the levels of words,sentences,and discourse.First of all,extension of word meaning is used after the phenomenon of the inconsistency between literal translation and the original text has been studied.Secondly,annotation is used by studying the gap between the source language and the target language.Thirdly,repetition is applied to analyze the phenomenon of repeating the key points of the original text in the translation.Fourthly,amplification is used to analyze the vacancy of sentence meanings and the phenomenon of ambiguous meanings.Fifthly,the translation is simplified when the translation of lengthy text is analyzed.Sixthly,the order of attributives and objects is adjusted through analyzing the grammatical structure of the source text in detail.Seventhly,division is capitalized on by analyzing the long difficult sentences in detail.Eighthly,negation is used by studying the differences between Chinese and English language expressions.Ninthly,change of voice is applied through studying the syntactic equivalence between Chinese and English.Tenthly,reconstruction is used by analyzing textual structure.Eleventhly,adaptation is adopted to analyze the specific context.Combining with the background and language characteristics of the selected text,the translator makes a concrete analysis of the specific examples and expounds the reasons for using each method in detail.Under the direction of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the translator makes the translation practice of the Buttonwood column in The Economist.Through careful analysis of the examples,the effective translation methods are summarized to keep the translation more equivalent to the original and more suited to the language habits of readers. |
