In order to assess the author’s interpreting performance and raise suggestions for future improvement, this report is composed,in which the author’s class interpreting task on the engineering project management seminar for Ethiopia held by the Commercial Department of Hunan Province is used as the analyzing material, and Gile’s Effort Model as the main explanatory interpreting theory. The analyzing part, also the main body of this report concerns two aspects: identifying the author’s good interpreting examples and explaining what kind of ability or elements had contributed to her interpreting success;and finding the author’s failed interpreting examples and explaining what the causes were and then giving corresponding solutions and suggestions. As a result, the author finds that she now possesses basic interpreting ability including note-taking and short-term memory, and has developed some interpreting techniques such as amplification, omission, logic reconstructing. While she also finds that her energy sometimes does not make all ends meet for several direct reasons including the speaker’s illogical and non-standard way of talking, her own limited memory capacity, insufficient background knowledge of the interpreting subject, and lack of experiences in dealing with unusual interpreting situation, for which the author proposes specific improvements each. All these shortcomings,at bottom, lead to the realization of two fundamental problems: first, the author’s current language knowledge is insufficient, which costs her more effort on interpreting output whose quality was barely satisfying, and affects the overall interpreting performance. Thus the author needs to enhance her bilingual rudiments;second, even when the author possesses the language knowledge needed for the interpreting occasion, her energy still often ran out,for extracting those knowledge requires more effort than available, which suggests that with the limited total amount of attentional resources and the difficulty of expanding it,the author needs to practice more to reduce the amount of energy needed for each interpreting step as a way to improve proficiency and the overall interpreting quality. In conclusion, the writing of this report allows the author to reflect on her interpreting problems, develop plans to overcome the difficulties she encountered, and ultimately grow into a market-ready interpreter. What is more, this report enables interpreting teachers to learn students’ actual difficulty in interpreting and make better adjustments to their current teaching methods which have certain relationship to some of the author’s limitation because they did not present enough training on some less explicit interpreting ability such as logic extracting and energy coordination.Lastly, the results of this report also have conducive implications for peer reference and self-cultivation of interpreting students.
