| In today’s world,science and technology are changing with each passing day.With increasingly frequent international scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation,more popular science books have made their way overseas to China.Being illustrative and well-liked,popular science books,as one of the important media of science and technology communication,can not only disseminate scientific knowledge to readers,but also improve their scientific literacy.Therefore,it is the urgent responsibility and obligation of translators to improve the translation quality of popular science texts.This thesis is an E-C translation report with its source text selected from the popular science book Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells,What It Doesn’t,and Why It Matters,which was published in April 2021 by the famous American scientist Dr.Steven E.Koonin.It is a popular book about climate science,which reveals some unknown truths behind climate change through numerous examples,experiments and data,helping readers to better understand the causes of climate change.In this translation practice report,the author,guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,firstly analyzes the key difficulties of the source text on the basis of a full comprehension of the source text.Difficulties mainly involve three aspects:difficulties at words level(technical terms,nominalization structures,chapter titles and graph titles),difficulties in translating parentheses(explanatory and complementary parentheses,critical parentheses,illustrative parentheses),difficulties at textual level(discourse cohesion and coherence).Then,the author,has adopted corresponding translation methods according to the characteristics of difficulties,such as literal translation,conversion between parts of speech,amplification,adjustment,Chinese four-character translation method,adoption of conjunctions,logic reorganization and so on.Consequently,the target text becomes more natural and fluent,in line with the target language readers’ reading habits.Finally,the author summarizes her gains and shortcomings and of this translation process.Through this translation,it is proved that functional equivalence theory has certain practicability in the process of translating popular science texts,which helps to produce high-quality translated texts and promote the effective transmission of scientific and popular science information.In addition,the author also hopes that the translation examples listed in this report could provide some reference for the translation of similar texts. |
