V.S.Naipaul(1932-2018),an Indian-British immigrant writer influenced by multiple cultures, was honored in 2001 for “combining insightful narrative with an untainted search that compels us to discover the truth of repressed history”.As a writer of post-colonial literature,Naipaul was deeply concerned about the history, fate and development of post-colonial countries. In 1962,1975 and 1988,Naipaul traveled to India for three times and created the “India Trilogy”.These three travel books are important representatives of Naipaul’s post-colonial literary works for the third world countries.During each 13-year interval,Naipaul’s writing about India changed significantly in both content and style. This paper takes Naipaul’s “India Trilogy” as the research object, and through close reading of the text, classifies and combs out the transformation of the content of Indian writing, analyzes the transformation of Indian writing style with the help of postcolonial theory, and analyzes the causes and significance of the transformation of Indian writing with post-colonial theory. The thesis mainly includes five parts:The introduction firstly combs Naipaul’s life experience and creation, and then summarizes the research situation of Naipaul at home and abroad, points out the significance of this study, defines Naipaul’s Indian writing. The first chapter mainly explores the transformation of Naipaul’s writing on India from three aspects: caste system, religious concept and Gandhiism. It points out that Naipaul has changed his writing on India from criticizing the phenomenon of India,to sympathizing with and analyzing the causes of the injured civilization in India, and finally to recognizing the changes of India in the new era.The second chapter analyzes the transformation of Naipaul’s Indian writing style from the perspective of narratology, which is mainly manifested by the change of narrative perspective, narrative style and narrative style. It points out that Naipaul has changed from personal subjective expression to objective presentation of India, which reflects that Indian writing gradually approaches from “virtual” to “real”.The third chapter analyzes the reasons for the transformation of Naipaul’s Indian writing, which mainly includes the following three aspects: First,Naipaul’s understanding of India was gradually deepened because of the transformation he experienced in India;Secondly,Naipaul’s attitude towards India changed due to the change of Eastern and Western culture. The third is the influence of the “truth” principle of literary creation concept, which urges him to constantly change the literary form and style to get closer to the truth. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the significance of the transformation of Naipaul’s Indian writing. The literary significance of Naipaul’s writing lies in breaking the genre limits of the traditional European travel notes and promoting the innovative practice of the literary genre. Its cultural and political significance lies in overturning the western cultural hegemony and restoring the real image of India’s “other”.
