The Translation Strategy Of Explicitation In E-C Translation

The advent of the 21 st century has been accompanied by the deterioration of the environment and the intensification of climate warming.Against such a backdrop,people have turned out to be aware of the significance and necessity of protecting the environment.The translation material of this translation report is excerpted from Under the Sky We Make:How to Be Human in a Warming World.The book depicts the increasingly serious environmental problems from the writer’s perspective,principally focusing on the issue of climate warming,and introduces what the world and individuals can do to safeguard the environment at the macro and micro levels,aiming to raise the reader’s awareness of curbing climate warming.Based on the translation practice of Chapters Ten to Thirteen from Under the Sky We Make: How to Be Human in a Warming World,this translation report remains highly conscious of the strategy of explicitation in E-C translation.As a practical translation strategy,explicitation refers to the translation strategy of expressing explicitly in the TT the implicit information that can be deduced from the ST through the context.According to the four classifications of explicitation by German scholar Klaudy,namely obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation,pragmatic explicitation,and translation-inherent explicitation,this report explores the viability of applying explicitation in E-C translation on the theoretical basis of obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation,and pragmatic explicitation,and proposes specific translation techniques to realize the explicitation of the TT,and to provide some reference for the study of the explicitation in E-C translation.This translation report consists of five chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces the source text and the importance of this translation project;Chapter Two describes the translation process,including the three stages: pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation;Chapter Three succinctly introduces the definition of explicitation,Klaudy’s classifications of explicitation,and the translation techniques that can be used to achieve explicitation;Chapter Four summarizes the six translation techniques: conversion,amplification,repetition,concretization,displacement and annotation given Klaudy’s first three classifications of explicitation and coupled with the specific examples in the TT;Chapter Five points out the major findings and limitations of this translation practice,to provide some suggestions for the better application of explicitation in the future translation practice.
