| Grandpa’s Mountain is a popular work of children’s literature based on actual historical events in the United States.This type of novel is often called a “microcosm of society” and has high research value.The translator of this report have completed the Chinese translation of the novel based on the interpretation of the source text,hoping that the Chinese translation will serve as a cultural bridge between the source text and the target reader,help Chinese children understand the historical background of the Great Depression,and promote the dissemination of the novel in China.The translator chooses chapters 22 to 28 of the novel Grandpa’s Mountain for translation practice.Under the guidance of functional equivalence translation theory,and according to the difficulties faced in translation practice,the author mainly focuses on “long sentences” and “difficult sentences” containing characters’ dialogue and rhetoric,and explores how to apply the theory and choose appropriate translation strategies to achieve equivalence between the source text and translated text,so that children can easily accept and understand them.In the translator’s view,the handling of long and difficult sentences is very important in translation.It is worth exploring how to develop a translation strategy for long sentences under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Through the translation of this text,the author found that the translation of characters’ dialogue and rhetoric is difficult.The core of a novel is characterization,and characters shaped by excellent writers often have unique linguistic characteristics.To a certain extent,the reproduction of the style of the original work depends on the proper handling of the characters’ language.The same is true of rhetoric,which is concrete and perceptible and also reveals the style of the original author.Through the writing of this report,the translator expects to provide a reference for the translation and research of children’s literature and to help Chinese children better understand foreign children’s literature. |
