This is a translation report of Explorations in Empirical Translation Process Research,a collection of essays edited by Professor Michael Carl of Kent State University. The original book was published by Springer Natural Switzerland AG in2021,which assembles a total of 15 original and interdisciplinary chapters based on investigations of empirical translation process research(TPR).The translator chooses Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 as the source text of the translation project, for that two chapters are both data-driven empirical studies and related to the metrics measuring post-editing effort. However, although the themes and research methods of the two theses are similar, their conclusions are to some extent contradictory. Therefore, taking the two chapters as the ST can help readers develop a critical view and also have a more comprehensive understanding of translation process studies. The mode of machine translation post-editing has been adopted in this translation project, the purpose of which is to explore the application of the machine translation system in academic translation, and put forward suitable post-editing strategies.Since the Youdao translation system is widely accepted, easily accessible and good at translation quality,it is selected as the translation tool of this project.According to the Text Typology proposed by British translation theorist Peter Newmark, the book belongs to the category of informative text, which is characterized by terminologies, strong logic, and conciseness in style. These features have brought great challenges to Youdao, which made different errors at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels respectively. Therefore,to improve the accuracy and readability of the TT,under the guidance of Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation theory, the author proposes several post-editing strategies for solving different types of MT errors. In terms of terminology errors, misunderstanding of the polysemous word and lack of translation at the lexical level, choosing the words’ appropriate meaning according to the context is the way to ensure the accuracy of the ST;in terms of illogicality, inappropriate word order and ambiguity of meaning at the syntactic level, the method of inversion and addition are adopted to increase the readability of sentences; In terms of inappropriate style at the textual level, literal translation and synonymous substitution are used in the post-editing process to preserve the language style of the ST.
