Zhang Wei is an important writer in the contemporary Chinese literary world. His creation matured after the reform and opening up when world literature was widely disseminated and flourishing in China. His works are deeply affected by foreign literature, such as French poet Rimbaud, whom he appreciates particularly.Rimbaud was a representative poet of pre-symbolism in France, and his works astonished the world by featuring gorgeous gods and demons once published. However,Rimbaud’s works have not yet received sufficient attention and research in the Chinese literary world since they were translated and introduced to China after the 1930 s.Therefore, exploring the spiritual connection between Zhang Wei and Rimbaud, and the similarities and differences in their mystery writing is a powerful supplement to current domestic textual studies of comparative literature. This article mainly adopts the parallel research method of comparative literature to conduct a comparative study on the two writers’ creation by mystic poetics theory and analyzes the similarities and differences in their presentation of mysterious factors based on text close reading. For this reason, this paper first expounds the comparability of the two authors in literary sense to confirm the rationality of this topic, then defines and expounds the connotation of mysticism, outlines the main content and development of Chinese and Western mystical poetics to pave the way for exploiting the background of Zhang Wei’s mystical creation and to confirm the historical status of Rimbaud’s mystical creation in the Western mystical poetics. There are many similarities between the mystery writings of Zhang Wei and Rimbaud. On a text basis, their workings overlap in the depiction of gods and demons, the creation of mysterious mood, and the development of magnificent themes. Both Zhang Wei and Rimbaud are accustomed to using variant images of animals, plants, elves, gods, witches, and other objects and humans to express mystery;they narrate themes of nature and earth, wandering and distant places to convey mysterious connotations;both are keen to express life and death, dream and reality to create a mysterious atmosphere to display the mystical mood.Zhang Wei and Rimbaud are obsessed with mystery, sharing the same interests of wildness and vagrancy, and applying relatively similar mystery writing techniques. However, their writing purposes are fundamentally different: judging from orientation,Zhang Wei’s creation is upward, conveying warmth, holiness, and hope of pursuit;while Rimbaud’s creation is downward, expressing darkness and morbidity with anger and escape;in terms of the reasons for the mysterious texts production, their cultural backgrounds and life experiences are totally different, resulting in the widely distinct mysterious features of their texts;practically,Zhang Wei is striving for integrating into the wilderness, while Rimbaud is obstinately rebelling against the reality with juvenile anger. This paper summarizes Zhang Wei and Rimbaud’s creation characters, their poetic values and and the universal laws of their mystical writing through the general review of the Chinese and Western mystical poetics and the detailed comparison of the similarities and differences between their creation. In the reflection of "self" and "other",the two writers clarify their different value tendencies,so as to further promote the comprehending and reflection of "self".
