| Xinyang is located at the center of the geographical dividing line between the north and the south of China. It is the intersection of regional cultures in the east, west, north and south of China, with obvious cultural diversity. After more than 3000 years of historical accumulation,Xinyang’s diverse cultural characteristics are reflected in the food and food culture. This paper is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of Xinyang History and Culture Series: Food Volume(excerpts). This book summarized the characteristics, development of history, sources and composition of Xinyang cuisine, etc.,as well as the dietary customs and causes of Xinyang people. The purpose is to promote the development of Xinyang cuisine, represented by Xinyang dishes, and inherit Xinyang food customs and culture. The book is a local informational text, but the excerpts are more narrative,so the author needs to ensure that the relevant cultural connotation can be accurately transmitted and on the other hand, ensure that the translated language is easy to understand.Cultural communication is the focus of this translation practice. The main difficulties encountered by the author in the process of translation include culture-loaded words and proper nouns, complex sentences, and unclear contextual logic.Considering those difficulties, this study explored the corresponding solutions based on the Cultural Translation Theory. It was found that about culture-loaded words and proper nouns, the strategy of annotation can effectively reduce the difficulty of understanding the text, help to break cultural barriers and achieve the purpose of cultural dissemination. For long sentences and semantic repetitions in the original text, division and omission were mainly used. This study employed the Cultural Translation Theory to guide the Chinese-English translation of narrative texts. On the basis of striving to transmit the source information without distortion,it analyzed some sentences with examples and elaborated on the application of various methods in translation practice. Then the author summarized the translation experience and wrote this translation practice report. |
