| The source text of translation practice report is taken from chapter three of Leonard Cassuto and Robert Weisbuch’s book The New Doctor: How to Build a Better Graduate Education published in 2021.The innovative reform of the doctoral education is the focus of this book, with liberal arts doctoral career diversity examined in chapter three. This source text is characterized by refined language, strong logic, and objective and rigorous writing styles. Many examples and comparisons are included in the source text, along with complex clauses and long sentences.Based on Peter Newmark’s text typology theory, the source text is classified as an informative text, with much space devoted to objectively describing liberal arts graduates’ career diversity.Based on the effects that translation would achieve and the linguistic features of the source text, the translator guides this translation practice with Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, more specifically, deepening the semantic and communicative translation to guide the whole translation process.Free translation, conversion, and omission are used to solve the words with extending meaning in the source text through semantic translation and communicative translation.Diversion, amplification and voice conversion are used primarily to handle long and difficult sentences in the source text.Fluency and coherence are primarily achieved at the discourse level through reference and semantic cohesion. In addition, the readability of the translated text is improved based on the reader’s expectation horizon. While informative texts cover a wide range of fields and have diverse translation strategies and methods, the informative text translation of social science still has a huge space to explore the useful translation skills. As a result, those translation methods summarized in this report are also valuable. The translator hopes that this translation report will contribute to translation studies and the reference examples will be provided for related translation activities. |
