Still life painting is an ancient kind of painting,which is to mobilize the subjective emotions of artists through the observation of objects,and to think about the current people and society,and transform this thinking into art works,and reflect the current social reality with the "real" art.This "reality" is the same as the "Substance of object" in traditional Chinese aesthetics."Reality" cannot be separated from the experience of life,and life is the source of art.The artist is closely related to the era in which he lives.It is the responsibility of artists to leave the most real information in the process of the era with literary and artistic works.Hainan’s unique geographical position in the South China Sea has played an important role in the course of history,leaving a wealth of historical documents and materials.However,as the historical evidences of South China Sea,few people have expressed and interpreted the documents from the perspective of painting practice.This paper attempts to study the historical document heritage of the South China Sea as the painting creation material,using the painting language to elaborate the author’s inner "real" emotion of the specific group in that history,and explore the "object image" contained behind those objects.This attempt is not only based on the local regional culture of Hainan,but also reflects the spiritual outlook of that time to a certain extent through these objects,which brings artists more creative ideas and expressive materials.Haikou,Wenchang and Qionghai in Qiongbei Region of Hainan Province are different from other regions in geography,history and culture.Firstly,geographically,these three areas are closest to the continental shelf and have always been the intersection of the Central Plains culture and the native culture of Hainan.Secondly,these three areas were historically important resupply points for Chinese ships heading to the South China Sea;Thirdly,in terms of culture,there are rich historical document heritages preserved in these areas.For example,Wenchang and Qionghai have the earliest handwritten copy of maritime navigation guide,Genglu Book,and "Qiao Pi",which carries the cultural memory of overseas Chinese in Hainan.These three characteristics are closely related to the South China Sea,and are the historical epitome of the working people in Qiongbei area of Hainan Province working in the South China Sea for a long time.These historical cultures are dependent on the paper document heritage entity to be passed down to the present.These historical documents and objects have experienced the baptism of time,showing the mottled historical marks,strengthening the beauty of the objects themselves,and providing me with creative inspiration for the creation of watercolor still life painting.The past and the present are my thoughts brought by these historical objects.This paper is based on the author’s regional theme creation South China Sea Story series to expand.The South China Sea Story series is composed of two works,Tales of the South China Sea: Geng Lu Book and Tales of the South China Sea: Qiao Pi.In the creation,the author tries to combine the traditional Chinese aesthetics with the artistic concept of contemporary figurative painting,using the genre of still life painting and watercolor painting to express,to bring some thoughts behind the creation of the work.
