Textual Analysis Of Olympic Mascots From The Perspective Of Lotman's Cultural Semiotic

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games came to a successful conclusion and the event was a huge success.During the event,the Olympic mascot,Bing Dwen Dwen,became the ’top star’.Athletes,tourists and journalists from all over the world loved the Bing Dwen Dwen and shared it on public media platforms so that more people could get to know the Bing Dwen Dwen and learn about Chinese culture.As an important symbol of the Olympic Games,the Olympic mascot embodies the spirit of the Olympic Games and the national culture of the host country,and its research is of great significance to the promotion of cultural communication and national unity.The design of the Olympic mascot incorporates the Olympic elements and the cultural elements of the host country,carries the Olympic spirit,conveys the core values of the Olympics and demonstrates the history and culture of the host country,and plays an important role in national cultural communication and cultural exchange between countries.This thesis adopts a unique perspective by applying Lotman’s textual theory to analyse the Olympic mascot as a cultural text.The thesis consists of three parts: the introduction,the main body of the thesis and the conclusion.The introductory section outlines the background of this thesis,reviews the relevant research results,explains the purpose and significance of this thesis,the content of the research,the research methods and the key points and difficulties,and points out the innovation of this thesis.The main body of the thesis consists of five chapters:The first chapter explicates Lotman’s textual theory and builds the theoretical foundation of this thesis.Chapter 2 introduces the origins of Olympic mascots,defines their textual properties,and describes the textual composition of Olympic mascots.Chapter 3 is the main content of this thesis,analysing the textual functions of the Olympic mascots: information transmission,information generation and cultural memory functions.The fourth chapter explains the communicative mode of the Olympic mascots.By analysing the communicative types of the Olympic mascot texts,the path of change of information is understood.Chapter 5draws the communicative significance of the Olympic mascot texts through the previous analysis and proposes some suggestions for the future development of Olympic mascots.The concluding section summarises the whole text and draws conclusions.
