"Chaoye Lei Yao" is a lexicographical note written by Zhao Sheng in the Southern Song Dynasty, who observed the courtroom etiquette and punishment during his work and heard the words of the gentry. The book consists of five volumes, which are very rich in content, covering the laws and regulations of the Song Dynasty, the customs of famous objects and many other aspects. At present, there are few concentrated and comprehensive studies on Chaoye Lei Yao in the academic circle. In order to fully understand this book, the discussion mainly starts from the following three parts:The first part is written by Zhao Sheng, the author of "Chao Ye Lei Yao".Because of the ordinary identity of the author Zhao Sheng, there is almost no introduction to his life, native place, occupation and other aspects in the existing historical data. Therefore, through the analysis of Zhao Sheng’s name, native place, occupation and so on in the handed down "Chaoye Lei Yao Xu",we can draw the conclusion that "Zhao Sheng" is named "Sheng",not "Sheng",and that "Chaoye Lei Yao" is published at Shuanggui Academy in Lin’an Prefecture. We can boldly speculate that the native place is Wenchang City,Hainan Province. The second part is about the spread and edition of Chaoye Lei Yao.From its completion to today,Chaoye Lei Yao has gone through three stages: unrecorded, sporadic records and extensive citations. In this chapter,it will be discussed from three aspects: its publication, description and edition.According to its preface, the author briefly discusses the process of writing the book, and the description is the focus of this chapter. He consulted the important official bibliography and private catalogue from the Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, and checked whether the official bibliography of "Chaoye Lei Yao" was recorded one by one.The first official bibliography of "Chaoye Lei Yao" was "Wenyuan Ge Bibliography" compiled by Yang Shiqi and others in the Ming Dynasty. This is because the introduction of "Yongle Da Dian" made this small classic stand out,The first private bibliography of "Chaoye Lei Yao" is the "Book of Bamboo Hall" compiled by Ye Sheng in Chenghua, but the record is very brief. It is concluded that the description of "Chaoye Lei Yao" began in the Ming Dynasty, and gradually increased in the Qing Dynasty, and the edition was gradually enriched. The third part is about the content and value of Chaoye Lei Yao.Zhao Sheng’s special identity allows him to listen to the principles of the criminal law of the court, and the contents recorded in the "Chaoye Lei Yao" are mostly what Zhao Sheng experienced during the dynasty, which provides us with convenience to understand the social conditions of the Song Dynasty. In this chapter, the entries recorded in Chaoye Lei Yao are divided into three aspects:etiquette, system, and name and object. It mainly analyzes the entries not included in the Chinese Dictionary,so its main value is to fill the gaps in the Chinese Dictionary, thus enriching Chinese vocabulary and embellishing Chinese culture.
