With the advancement of English curriculum and teaching reform,highlighting the educational value of disciplines and cultivating students’ core competencies have become new tasks for China’s education.Language ability is the basis of core competencies,and reading is the core basis of language ability.However,there are still some problems in the current teaching of English reading in junior high school,for example,some teachers focus on teaching knowledge but ignore the cultivation of thinking quality,which limits the development of students’ creative thinking;the reading teaching tends to be patterned and superficial,which is not conducive to students’ deep understanding of the text;some students lack interest in English reading learning and don’t actively participate in classroom activities and so on.These problems affect the improvement of the quality of English reading teaching and limit the improvement of students’ reading level and the cultivation of core competencies.In The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition),the curriculum goal of cultivating and developing students’ core competencies was established and teachers were required to practice Activity-based English Learning.Specifically,Activity-based English Learning advocates that guided by the thematic meaning and based on the discourse,students can learn in experience,apply in practice and innovate in transfer,so as to achieve the combination of learning and applying,solve real problems,and promote the formation and development of core competencies.Guided by Activity-based English Learning,the researcher tries to design effective teaching activities to solve the current problems in junior high school English reading teaching.The purpose of this research is to explore the following three questions:(1)What effect does the reading teaching based on Activity-based English Learning have on junior high school students’ English reading learning attitude?(2)What effect does the reading teaching based on Activity-based English Learning have on junior high school students’ textual comprehension ability?(3)What effect does the reading teaching based on Activity-based English Learning have on junior high school students’ creative thinking? Taking the students in Grade 8 of Luoshan No.1 Junior High School as participants,this study conducted two rounds of action research,which lasted for a semester.Relevant data were obtained through questionnaires,interviews,teaching journals and tests.Through the analysis and discussion of the data,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)The reading teaching based on Activity-based English Learning has a positive impact on students’ reading learning attitude.A variety of classroom activities enhance students’ interest and confidence in reading.In addition,most students are gradually aware of the importance of reading,and their enthusiasm for reading learning has greatly improved.(2)The reading teaching based on Activity-based English Learning can improve students’ textual comprehension ability.Firstly,students’ reading scores have improved significantly.Besides,students have also made significant improvements in literal comprehension level,inferential comprehension level and evaluative comprehension level.(3)The reading teaching based on Activity-based English Learning can help promote the development of students’ creative thinking,including originality of thinking,association and imagination,imitation and transfer.In addition,in the research of English reading teaching in junior high school based on Activity-based English Learning,some specific suggestions are put forward to provide reference for further study.
