Research On The Historical Process Of The Localization Of Nanking University

With the beginning of the Opium War in 1840,Western missionaries entered China in an attempt to establish a favorable position for Christianity in China.However,as Christianity is a foreign culture,it must achieve its own localization if it is to be accepted and recognized by the Chinese people.Therefore,missionaries began to establish missionary universities on the land of China and use missionary universities as a carrier for preaching activities.That is to say,the Christian university itself is the product of the localization of Christianity.According to the statistics of Jesse G.Lutz,a famous American expert in the history of Chinese Christian universities,the modern Christian missionaries founded a total of 16 Christian universities in China.After the outbreak of the May 4th Movement,the trend of nationalism spread widely in all sectors of Chinese society.A vehement assault on Christian universities,spearheaded by numerous social groups and the scholarly community,demanded that they relinquish theological instruction and be governed by the Chinese government,hence the rise of the non-Christian movement.In order to continue to develop in China,missionary universities have gradually embarked on the path of localization.Nanking University is one of the earliest ecclesiastical universities established in modern China,and also one of the ecclesiastical universities with the largest scale and social impact.In order to gain recognition from the Chinese society,Nanking University has been promoting its own localization since its establishment.After filing a case with the Chinese government,Nanking University gradually became popular and localized,and became an important part of China’s modern private higher education.An in-depth analysis of the historical process of Nanking University’s localization is the aim of this paper.The rationale for selecting this topic,the research status,the research importance,the research techniques,and the fundamental notion of localization are all outlined.The first chapter of the article analyzes the background factors of the localization of Nanking University: the impact of the national liberation movement in modern China,the challenge of the local universities in modern China,the promotion of the people with insight in the western church and the efforts of the Chinese teachers and students of Nanking University.From Chapter two to Chapter four,the historical process of the localization of Nanking University is divided into stages:the early efforts of the localization of Nanking University,the practice of the localization of Nanking University from the filing of a case to the comprehensive anti-Japanese war,and the achievements of the localization of Nanking University from the period of the comprehensive anti-Japanese war to the post founding of the People’s Republic of China.The fifth chapter discusses the historical contributions of the localization of Nanking University: first,promoting the improvement of the quality of running Nanking University;Secondly,it has cultivated a group of outstanding talents for modern China;Third,promote the process of localization of Chinese missionary universities.
