| As an important means of social governance in China, the people’s mediation system has made significant contributions to the development of socialist democracy and culture.China,a responsible country, will actively promote global governance and contribute its valuable experience in building the rule of law to the international system for the benefit of people throughout the world. Thus, the translation studies of the people’s mediation system are of great significance.Based on Chesterman’s expectancy norm, this report focuses on the translation of selected chapters from the book entitled Governance of Good Law for Dispute Settlement at the Community Level--Theory and Practice of People’s Mediation. It aims at exploring how the translation strategies proposed under the expectancy norm theory guide the translation of different types of lexical terms, help produce semantically appropriate English sentences, and logically coherent and well-structured discourse,so as to make the version close to qualitative expectancy norms of English text, and conform to the reading habits and reading expectations of the target language readers. In order to make the translation both faithful to the source text and readable at the same time, based on the analysis of the source text, the paper explores how the type of text and the socio-culture of the target language affect the delivery and presentation of the translated text.At the same time, the qualitative expectancy norms of the English text proposed in the Chesterman’s expectancy norm is used as a criterion to measure the quality of the translation. Finally,we sort the difficult parts in the current translation project and analyze the application of various specific translation methods under the framework of Chesterman’s expectancy norm theory on the three levels of vocabulary, sentence cohesion and discourse coherence. In terminology translation, the literal translation method is preferred to guarantee faithfulness to the original term, and at the same time,cross-check is made to ensure accuracy. In cases of expressions with Chinese characteristics, cultural filtering methods are used to convey the meaning, including free translation, and transforming concrete image into abstract expression. As far as cohesion is concerned, the structure of the original text is adjusted according to the context and the translation unit is readjusted. The English hypotaxis structure can be improved by adding relevant hyponyms and inserting cohesive devices, applying amplification, and strengthening logical relation. For discourse coherence,it is sometimes necessary to adjust the arrangement of information in the original text, sort out the logic of the target text, and achieve the optimal arrangement of English sentence structure at a macro level;and at a micro level,by keeping the subjects consistent, fluency, coherence and high readability of the version can be generally achieved. With the help of Chesterman’s expectancy norm theory, this report analyzes and discusses the translation of Governance of Good Law for Dispute Settlement at the Community Level--Theory and Practice of People’s Mediation, which may provide reference for the translation of similar texts in the future. At the same time,it is hoped that the present study may promote the translation of experiences and achievements in the development of the rule of law, help English readers understand the rule of law and the legal system of China, and make some contributions to the exchange of experiences and ideas on the rule of law between the East and the West. |
