Language and Literature | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | As a world-renowned classic writer,Garcia Marquez’s works have distinctive characteristics and have made great contributions to the development of Latin American literature and even world literature. For a long time,Marquez’s novels have been labeled as Latin American magical realism, and his interpretation by researchers is usually inseparable from the Latin American culture and magical realism. In fact,Marquez’s works are rich and complex, and the connotations that can be explored are broad and profound. Some researchers have noticed that Marquez’s novels have a certain carnival color, but they have not discussed it in depth. This paper will conduct an expanded study on this issue, exploring the formation of Marquez’s idea of carnivalization, the carnivalized world picture of his novels and carnivalized narrative strategies, and the relationship between magical realism and carnivalization. The paper consists of three parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introductory part firstly reviews Marquez’s life and creative experience, and gives an overview of the author’s creative pursuit and the transformation of his creative tendencies;secondly,it introduces the achievements of Marquez’s research at home and abroad, and points out the areas to be studied in depth;finally,it points out the research method, purpose and significance of this thesis. The main text consists of four chapters. The first chapter is about Marquez and carnivalization. This chapter focuses on the relationship between Marquez’s work and carnivalization.Firstly,it compares Bakhtin’s carnival theory, and then analyzes the formation of Marquez’s carnival writing. The carnivalized folk culture of Latin America constitutes an important background for Marquez’s carnival writing;Marquez’s unique life experience provides material and experience for his carnival writing;and the social reality of political turmoil and power change in Latin America constitutes the historical discourse background for Marquez’s carnival writing. The second chapter is the carnivalized world picture.First of all,Marquez’s novel shows the confrontation between the two worlds of the“Tower of Babel” and the “Garden of Eden”,the former pursuing absolute power and the latter creating ideals by memory and imagination.By sketching these two worlds,Marquez powerfully explains the antagonistic relationship between official life and carnival life.Secondly,Marquez’s novels have a free and open carnivalesque space and time.To a certain extent, his fictional narratives are free from linear historical time and use “threshold” time to show the change of characters’ spiritual connotation, indicating the carnivalesque spirit of subversion and renewal;certain specific spaces constructed by his novels also have carnivalesque characteristics, which appear in many of Marquez’s novels. The brothel, which appears in many of Marquez’s novels,is a social space of convergence,a place where various characters converge, where people break away from the order of daily life, unleash their vitality and pursue the solace of love. These characters transcend the shackles imposed on them by loneliness and death with their true existence, highlighting the carnivalesque values of human duality, unfinishedness and potential possibilities. The third chapter is the narrative strategy of carnivalization. This chapter analyzes the carnivalesque narrative strategies of Marquez’s novels from three levels: dialogue, irony, and crowning and decrowning.Firstly, the potential dialogues of different types of characters constitute a mammoth “carnival square”,which together reveal the meaning of life’s existence.Secondly, the novel provides a reflective position through irony, showing the game between truth and falsehood, and completes the post-deconstruction construction pursued by carnivalization. Finally, the novel highlights the artificial constructiveness and relativity of the idols of power and the laws of survival with the structure of crowning and decrowning, showing the operation and meaning of the carnivalized ritual of death and regeneration, destruction and renewal. The fourth chapter is on magical realism and carnivalization. This chapter focuses on the similar artistic thinking and poetic character of magical realism and carnivalization, and searches for the inner connection between them,so as to deeply explore Marquez’s unique carnivalization writing and contribute to the deeper study of magical realism and carnivalization theory. The concluding remarks summarize the above and reiterate the nature and significance of Marquez’s carnivalesque writing. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Marquez,
