Ghost Tower:The Cage Of Body And Spirit

The experiences of Bai Wei is familiar to the female characters’ in her masterpiece Out the Ghost Tower,and Bai Wei faces the siege of the Ghost Tower,too.She has fallen into the siege of the Ghost Tower twice.The control of Bai Wei’s father and husband is the sign of the first Ghost Tower.In the cage created by paternal and husband,Bai Wei has undergone a series of physical and spiritual hardships,and the road to study and independence is heavily hindered.With the help of her schoolmates,Bai Wei went to Japan in 1918,marking the end of the first phase of the Ghost Tower siege.The second ghost tower,mainly refers to the love and entanglement between Bai Wei and Yang Sao.At that time,because of chance to know each other,they fall in love in Japan,but Yang Sao is not the one can be entrusted.He betrayed and confided repeatedly,which became another physical and spiritual cage for Bai Wei.In 1934,Bai Wei finally determined to break up with Yang Sao,signaling Bai Wei break out of the encirclement of the ghost tower for the second time.Bai Wei was sieged by the ghost tower twice,and broke out of the tower twice.However,outside the ghost tower is not a bright world.Both the wandering life after the first time out of the tower,and being excluded experience after the second time out of the tower,it seems to imply that the situation of women is always difficult,whether inside or outside the tower.Therefore,in addition to the visible ghost tower,there is still an invisible ghost tower,which is the real source of the former’s oppression power,while the former is just the concrete place where the latter exerts pressure on women.In this sense,the ghost tower is a "curse" that women can never escape.It is in this sense that Bai Wei’s creation indicates,intentionally or unintentionally,her deep understanding of "ghost tower" as a kind of structure and a kind of destiny.
