| Pei Wensi was a renowned poet in the Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam.His poetry was created during a time when the Tang style was prevalent in the Nguyen court,but his works did not follow the trend.Instead,he integrated elements of the Song style,resulting in a highly distinctive poetic style.In his social interactions and poetic expressions,he was devoted to expressing sentiments and emotions,carving out a unique path outside of the overall elegance and Tang-style rhyme scheme of the Nguyen poetic tradition.His poetry,on one hand,followed the spontaneity of Su Shi,imbued with a natural and unrestrained quality,while on the other hand,emulated Lu You’s concern for national affairs and people’s livelihoods,balancing both emotions and reason.In choosing to continue the Song poetic tradition in a time when Tang style dominated the Nguyen court,he took a path less traveled.The first and second chapters of this article provide a biographical account of Pei Wensi,examining historical records to supplement information about his birth and death years,courtesy names,and other related issues.The article also sorts out his career history and life trajectory.By investigating his writings,the article clarifies the source and publication history of his poetry collections,as well as the extant poems in his corpus.The extant poems of Pei Wensi were mostly written during his diplomatic missions to China,with a few composed during his time as a regional commander in the northern frontier.About one-third of his poems were created in literary exchanges,demonstrating strong social and communicative functions.By examining the relationship between his social interactions and creative works,we can see that Pei Wensi displayed a flexible selection of poetic forms in specific social situations and with particular social partners,fully leveraging the communicative function of poetry as Confucius put it,"poetry can make people harmonize." On the other hand,his social poetry also includes works that seek emotional and intellectual resonance.Through his exchanges of poetry with Yang Enshou and Sheng Yizhao,we can read his emotionally powerful and brilliant narrative poems.Whether gambling on rhyme or using overlapping rhyme,he constantly honed his skills and improved his poetic art through literary exchanges with close friends.As a diplomatic poet,Pei Wensi participated in regional literary gatherings initiated by literati and scholars from different regions,playing a special role in spreading regional culture overseas.Through his diplomatic exchanges in the north,he not only gained insight into the dynamics of the late Qing poetry scene,but also revealed a more vivid and active regional poetry culture.His diplomatic exchanges in the north had a profound impact on his poetic orientation.In close literary exchanges with Song dynasty poets such as Sun Yiyuan,he was influenced by the "Song style" poetic orientation,and further deepened his understanding and pursuit of the style in his response poems.The creative orientation influenced by his diplomatic exchanges in the north continued into his later stage of creative writing when he served as a regional commander in the northern frontier for several years.The poetic concepts of Pei Wensi went through a transformation from Tang to Song,and then to emphasizing the pursuit of Song style.His poetic creation aimed for a retro tone,with a particular focus on imitating the Song style.He studied and adopted the styles of renowned poets such as Su Shi and Lu You in his appreciation and learning of Song poetry.In terms of poetic techniques and personal qualities,he was deeply influenced by Su Shi,particularly in aspects such as poetic creation and personal attitude towards life.He is considered as a successor to Su Shi and his poetry among the overseas Chinese.During his time as a frontier official,he drew inspiration from the themes and styles of Lu You in his Chinese poetry.His attitude of learning from many teachers enabled him to draw rich content from Tang and Song poetry,and make innovative attempts in terms of theme selection,image usage,and allusions.His poetic style presents a diverse style with an emphasis on the Tang and Song styles. |
