| At present,the science and technology of water resources develops rapidly.On the one hand,we need to learn and use foreign advanced science and technology to serve China’s water resources development;On the other hand,water resources projects in China are booming,and many successful experiences can also be introduced abroad so that the world can better understand China.All of these require us to read and translate a great deal of English literature on water resources.English for Water Resources is a college English textbook compiled according to the needs of the water resources industry,the discipline characteristics,the talent training specifications and students’ needs of my university.This book focuses on cultivating students’ ability of reading and translating professional English to meet the needs of economic development.This is a report on the practice of English-Chinese translation of English for Water Resources(excerpts).The chapters of Water Cycle(Unit 1),Water Resources(Unit 2),Lakes and Rivers(Unit 3)and Hydroelectric Power(Unit 9)are selected as the case analysis objects of the text.Guided by the “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(CEA)framework proposed by Professor Li Changshuan,this paper explores and studies the problems encountered in the process of translation,such as the understanding of terms,the translation of long and difficult sentences,the Europeanization of Chinese,cohesion and coherence,and the expression of authentic Chinese.The strategies and methods adopted mainly include:literal translation and free translation,logical analysis,search and verification,reading parallel text,amplification and omission,conversion,adoption of four-character structure,etc.This report is divided into four parts.The first chapter is the description of this translation practice,which mainly introduces the background and significance of the task,as well as the characteristics of the text language and the translation process;The second chapter mainly describes the content of the CEA framework,and introduces the meaning and requirements of comprehension,expression and adaptation respectively;The third chapter is the main body of the report,which analyzes the problems and solutions encountered in the translation process through case studies;Chapter IV is the conclusion of translation practice,summarizing gains and weaknesses of this practice and prospects for the future. |
